Poverty Project International

It all starts with the ONE in front of you

How You can Help Those in Need

Dont be overwhelmed by the name. Poverty Project International is just me, Laura, connecting with local people in Mexico and Central America. The name came from the time I spent living among the poor in Panama in order to better understand their way of life. Poverty Project Interational is a registered non-profit, but there is no staff. It is life happening. Sometimes it is volunteers. But mostly, it is just a way for me to help the person standing in front of me.

Puerto Morelos

Please help me help those who cannot help themselves

The beautiful little fishing village of Puerto Morelos, where I live year-round now, is suffering deeply in the midst of this world-wide pandemic--not because people are sick, but because most have lost their jobs. The area is poor to begin with and relies heavily on tourism for work. This year, the high season ended a month early. All the snowbirds left to take shelter at home and tourism came to a screeching hault. In one month, over 60,000 jobs were lost in the state, and what little money the locals had saved up is now gone. Most are eating only beans and rice and many are not even able to buy gas for their stoves so they can cook. Today I spoke with a lady who was cooking beans over an open fire in her front yard. She said her family has not eaten any fruit, eggs, milk, or bread in weeks.

These local fishermen, tour-guides, restaurant and hotel workers have a long road ahead of them before there will be bread on the table. Most likely it will be next November before the tourists return any money is flowing in.

These precious people need help. So, I am working with a local grocery store, buying food and basic cleaning supplies at cost, and donating them to those hard-hit in the poorest part of town. There are abouts 500 families living there in very difficult conditions. They had almost nothing to begin with. No beds, almost no furniture, limited kitchen supplies. Now, they are struggling to eat. I want to provide food and basic cleaning supplies like soap and bleach to every family in the area. I know that it will be months before things return to some semblance of normalcy. So I hope to be able to give food and supplies to every family in the area monthly until they can once again provide for themselves. Of, course, there is no way I can do that without help.

Please consider helping me help those who need it most. The cost of a bag of food and basic cleaning supplies is only $15 USD. If you can give, please know that it will go a long way to helping people who, in this very difficult time, simply have no way to help themselves. To help, you can go to my website at lauralabrie.com and click on Give Back. Every donation helps a family in need. I understand that this is a difficult time for all of us. But it is also a time we can pull together and reach out to those who are struggling the most. 15 dollars may seem like an insignificant amount to you and me, but it will mean the world to them.

Thank you for taking time to listen and to open your heart to the poor.

With all compassion to you and your family during this difficult time,

Laura LaBrie.
